Digital Marketing Agency Pricing Explained

By Alex Crisan · · 11 min read

Digital marketing agencies mostly charge a monthly retainer per service. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the average retainer was $2,917 a month, and Clutch lists US and Canadian agencies at $100 to $149 an hour. At those rates a $1,000 retainer buys about 7 to 10 hours of work a month. Ad spend is billed separately.

Every figure here links to the survey or directory it came from and says who was asked, because the most quoted ranges come from directories of large reviewed projects and from agencies publishing their own rate cards. Where Blank Box Digital prices appear, they come from our published pricing page and are labeled as ours.

Key Takeaway

Judge a retainer by the hours it buys and by what the fee is tied to. At Clutch's $100 to $149 hourly band for US and Canadian agencies, $1,000 a month buys about 7 to 10 hours. Flat fees pay for work, fees based on a percentage of ad spend grow with the budget, and survey averages sit far above what most small businesses plan to spend.

How Much Do Marketing Agencies Charge Per Month?

Marketing agencies charge per service, per month, and published figures spread widely. Ahrefs found an average SEO retainer of $2,917 across 439 providers, Credo found about half of PPC firms set a minimum of $1,000 to $3,000, and Clutch lists digital marketing agencies at $5,000 to $50,000 a month. Who was surveyed explains much of the gap.

Service Reported Price Source
SEO retainer Average $2,917 a month. Agencies average $3,209 and freelancers $1,348.63 Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, updated August 2024

Social media management Average project about $5,107 a month. Most reviewed projects under $10,000 Clutch, reviewed projects, September 2026

The US figures run higher than the global ones. The most common SEO retainer band worldwide in the Ahrefs survey is $500 to $1,000 a month, yet 79.1% of providers in the US and Canada charge at least $1,001. Price also rises with each channel. Credo's PPC survey describes a base fee of $1,000 to $2,000 a month for one channel, plus $500 to $750 for each channel added. What moves the number within one channel is covered in our guide to how much SEO costs and our breakdown of what Google Ads cost beyond the management fee.

What Does a Monthly Retainer Buy in Hours?

A retainer buys time, so divide it by an hourly rate. Clutch lists US and Canadian digital marketing agencies at $100 to $149 an hour, which turns a $2,000 retainer into roughly 13 to 20 hours a month, or three to five hours a week. The table converts common retainer sizes the same way.

Monthly Retainer Hours at $149 Hours at $100 Hours per Week
$500 3.4 5.0 0.8 to 1.2
$1,000 6.7 10.0 1.5 to 2.3
$2,000 13.4 20.0 3.1 to 4.6
$3,000 20.1 30.0 4.6 to 6.9
$5,000 33.6 50.0 7.8 to 11.5
$10,000 67.1 100.0 15.5 to 23.1

A month is taken as 4.33 weeks. Those hours cover everything the agency does on the account, not only the output you see. Reporting, calls, research, and fixing whatever broke all come out of the same budget. At $500 a month a business buys roughly an hour a week, which suits one narrow recurring task and cannot cover several channels at once.

Other surveys give similar rates. Ahrefs puts the average SEO provider at $111 an hour, so its $2,917 average retainer is about 26 hours a month. Credo's older 2022 survey averaged $138 an hour worldwide and found 49.88% of agencies do not bill hourly at all. Treat the conversion as a way to read a quote, not as the way the agency bills. Ask any agency how many hours a month its retainer assumes. Our own retainers are priced by scope as well, so the table describes the market rather than our hours.

How Do Marketing Agencies Price Their Work?

Agencies price work in six ways, which are monthly retainers, fixed project fees, hourly billing, a percentage of ad spend, performance fees, and hybrids that combine them. Retainers dominate. In Ahrefs' survey, 78.2% of SEO providers use them, 48.9% price per project, and 34.8% bill hourly, with many using more than one.

Model How the Fee Is Set Who It Favors
Monthly retainer A flat fee each month for an agreed scope Both sides, when the scope is written down. Cost and income are predictable
Project fee One price for a defined deliverable, such as a website The client, when the deliverable is specific, because overruns fall on the agency
Hourly An hourly rate times the hours worked The agency on open-ended work. The client on a small, clear task
Percent of ad spend A share of the monthly ad budget, often quoted at 10% to 20% The agency, because the fee rises with the budget whether or not results do
Performance A payment per lead, sale, or ranking The client on paper. In practice it turns on who defines a lead
Hybrid A base fee plus a variable part, such as a percentage above a spend threshold Depends on where the base and the threshold sit

Retainers are close to universal. Only 1.21% of agencies in Credo's survey offer no retainer at all. No primary survey we could find measures how common performance pricing is, and Credo's typical PPC structure is itself a hybrid, a flat base fee with 15% of spend added once monthly spend passes $10,000.

Why a Percentage of Ad Spend Rewards Spending

A percentage fee ties the agency's income to the size of the ad budget rather than to what the budget produces. At 15%, a $3,000 monthly budget carries a $450 fee and a $6,000 budget carries $900. Managing the second account is rarely twice the work, and the agency earns more by recommending the larger budget whether or not the extra clicks convert.

The 10% to 20% range is the figure agency blogs repeat most, and we found no primary survey confirming it. Rate cards compiled by PPC.io, itself an agency, show the spread. WebFX and WordStream charge 12% to 20% of spend, Lyfe Marketing charges 10% to 16% and falls as spend rises, and Straight North charges $1,000 or 15%, whichever is greater. A flat management fee removes the incentive. Our Google Ads management is a flat $495 a month, and the ad spend goes directly to the ad platform.

Why Do Published Agency Price Ranges Skew High?

The best-known ranges describe projects that get reviewed on directories, not the typical small business. Clutch builds its pricing guides from reviewed projects, and most digital marketing project budgets there fall between $10,000 and $49,999. A 2026 UENI survey of 7,413 US businesses found 90.4% planned to spend $200 a month or less on marketing.

Planned Monthly Spend Share of Businesses
Nothing 26.1%
$1 to $50 39.4%
$51 to $200 24.9%
$201 to $500 5.7%
Over $500 3.8%

Neither source describes the whole market. UENI's respondents answered on the onboarding form of a low-cost website builder, so the sample leans toward the very smallest businesses, and a quarter of them planned to spend nothing. Clutch leans the other way, because the projects that collect reviews on a directory skew larger than a typical small business budget. A business weighing an agency usually sits somewhere between the two.

A revenue benchmark is a better guide. The SBA's marketing plan tool suggests businesses with less than $5 million in revenue put 7 to 8 percent of revenue into marketing, within a wider range of 2 to 20 percent. On $1 million of revenue that is $70,000 to $80,000 a year, or about $5,800 to $6,700 a month, and it covers ad spend, the website, and staff time as well as any agency fee. For comparison, the 2026 CMO Survey of 308 US marketing leaders puts marketing at 9.0% of company revenue.

For a smaller company the practical question is which single channel to fund first, and our small business marketing plans are scoped that way.

Set against the market figures above, these are low numbers. Our $745 SEO retainer sits below the $1,001 floor that 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charge in the Ahrefs survey, and each plan covers one channel for one business, with the deliverables listed on the Blank Box pricing page. Blank Box Digital is a small team in Austin, TX, no handoffs, so the people on the call are the people doing the work. If this table and the pricing page ever differ, the pricing page is current.

What Do Blank Box Plans Include, and What Are the Terms?

Blank Box Digital's monthly marketing services are month-to-month with no long-term contract, and they can be cancelled at any time with no cancellation fee or penalty. They start immediately with no separate onboarding charge. Ad spend is never part of the fee, and clients keep all the work and assets we create for them.

Those terms are not universal. Credo's PPC survey found about 31% of providers require a minimum of 6 to 12 months, 26% have no minimum, and onboarding fees run $1,000 to $2,500. Our website projects carry one flat fee with no setup charge on top. Automations work differently, with a one-time setup fee for the build and integrations and a monthly retainer to run them. Database Reactivation is the exception, a flat-fee 30-day project with no ongoing cost.

How Should You Compare Agency Quotes?

Compare agency quotes by putting them in the same units. Work out the hours each fee buys, take ad spend out of the total, note what the fee is tied to, and read the minimum term and exit costs. Two quotes with the same monthly total can describe very different amounts of work.

  • Convert to hours. Divide the monthly fee by $100 and by $149 to get the Clutch range, then ask the agency how many hours its scope assumes.
  • Separate the fee from ad spend. A quote that bundles the two hides what the management itself costs.
  • Find what the fee is tied to. A percentage of spend grows with the budget, and a flat fee does not.
  • Read the exit. Minimum months, notice period, onboarding fees, and cancellation fees all belong in the comparison.
  • Confirm ownership. You should hold owner access to the ad accounts, analytics, website, and content, which is one of the checks in our guide on how to choose a digital marketing agency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a typical retainer for a marketing agency?

It depends on the channel and on who was asked. Ahrefs found an average SEO retainer of $2,917 a month across 439 providers, with agencies averaging $3,209 and freelancers $1,348.63. Worldwide, the most common band in the same survey was $500 to $1,000 a month. Clutch lists US and Canadian agencies at $100 to $149 an hour.

Is 15% of ad spend a fair management fee?

It is inside the range agencies usually quote, 10% to 20%, although that range comes from agency blogs rather than a primary survey. Whether it is fair depends on the budget. At 15%, the fee on a $6,000 monthly budget is $900 and doubles if the budget doubles, even when the work does not. A flat management fee avoids that link.

How much should a small business spend on marketing?

The SBA's general rule is 7 to 8 percent of revenue for businesses under $5 million, within a range of 2 to 20 percent. That budget covers everything, including ad spend, the website, and any agency fees. A business with $500,000 in revenue following the rule would spend $35,000 to $40,000 a year, or about $2,900 to $3,300 a month.

Do marketing agencies require long contracts?

Many do. In Credo's PPC pricing survey, about 31% of providers required a minimum of 6 to 12 months and 26% had no minimum at all. Ask for the minimum term, the notice period, and any cancellation fee in writing before signing. Blank Box Digital's monthly marketing services are month-to-month and can be cancelled at any time.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

Usually, per month. Ahrefs found freelancers averaged $1,348.63 a month for SEO against $3,209 for agencies. The Editorial Freelancers Association reports blog and web writing rates of 25 to 45 cents a word. A freelancer usually covers one skill, so a business that needs SEO, ads, and a website either hires several people or leaves gaps.
